St Tropez Extra Dark Tanning Mousse Review

BY REBECCA DIEUDONNE

Their darkest tan yet, we test run the St. Tropez Extra Dark Bronzing Mousse. As a seasoned fake tanner, I have tried and tested a copious amount of formulations.

With St. Tropez being a favourite I set out to try their darkest tan yet – achieved by developing for eight hours

When you get peckish, there’s over 25 stalls of Wellington’s best festival food at Beervana, from oysters to whitebait fritters, tacos, fried chicken, vegan creations and desserts. The other thing to note is that you don’t actually have 5 hours - you’ve got 4 hours - as the last hour is a wind-down where water and food is encouraged. To prevent a raging hangover, I STRONGLY suggest having a glass of water with each brew. It’s something that most people forget while in a euphoric state but you’ll thank me the morning after if you follow my lead. I’m pretty much a professional drinker (as proven by my acupuncturist) and keeping hydrated has alleviated a great deal of suffering since I decided to make drinking water a habit. Hangovers get worse with age, but the wisdom to keep the body hydrated will allow you to party like you’re 21 again - without the hangover.

Application

The mousse itself was easy to apply - it's pretty moisturising (I find lotions/creams more moisturising though for frequent, ongoing use). It spreads easily, and blended relatively well onto my knees, elbows and ankles. Because I am normally fair skinned, a smooth and even application is important as any unevenness will be obvious. I can’t imagine you would get a good result without using a mitt.

The scent is light and not overly noticeable – the website promises no scent, but you do know you’re wearing it. As for its development, I wouldn’t suggest you do this during the day as you need to stay away from all water for at least four hours (this includes washing hands etc). White hands and tanned wrists are a dead giveaway! You can usually get away with the blotchy effect if you're using gradual tanners, but with such a strong colour disparity, you will need the pigment to stay on your hands for as long as possible. Ditto for giving deodorants a miss too.

I left this on for about 10~11 hours (why not?), and loved the colour when I woke up. It was an even, deep bronze that hadn’t streaked or grabbed anywhere. I knew the top layer was still the guide tint though, so into the shower I went. I know that the website promised no transfer, but with a white dress that evening I wasn’t going to take any chances!

It was lucky I did, as the water was quite orange for a bit while I washed off the tint in the shower. It’s a good idea to shave your legs etc the night before, so you don’t remove your fresh tan after it has developed.

I apply a light coat of moisturiser and my skin looks great. The final colour is a dark, but still natural looking tan that is even and my skin looks hydrated.

It’s a bit of a job to blend my face and makeup with the rest of my body, but a bit of bronzer does wonders to even everything out. Naturally darker people won’t struggle with this so much, obviously.

Final Thoughts

As for my final verdict? I would 100% use this again ahead of a big event when I want the equivalent depth of a spray tan, but less orange! I didn’t notice any transfer while wearing my dress but I was careful to avoid excess rubbing around armholes etc. This is probably a bit dark to use regularly for my pale skin – but medium-toned people would enjoy this!

In regards to fading, I would say this lasted well with minimal moisturising of 5-6 days (I always re-do my tan weekly). When it did fade, it was even and I wasn’t left with noticeable patches. It exfoliated off well, and I didn’t have to scrub my skin raw to remove it. I did notice rubbing on my ankles from where I had my heels, but a soft rub with a dark towel after a hot shower sorted this out. This is a high performing tan which is (mostly!) idiot proof with a bit of pre-care and an even application.
