BY REBECCA DIEUDONNE & SOPHIE CHUNG

Designed to be buildable, the Dior Backstage Lip Palette is a handbag go-to.

The great thing about the new Dior Backstage Lip Palette, $102, is how you can carry 9 shades in a portable compact that would fit in any handbag.

The pros: I like that the shade selection is very easy to wear, and all of them are everyday shades that would suit a range of skin tones. There is a selection of sheer glosses, satin lipsticks and mattes. I love the Satin Rosewood shade. The finish of the satin and glosses are creamy, and not sticky which is great! (None of this getting gloss stuck in the hair situation).

The cons: They are not the most long-wearing of formulas – but are designed to be buildable with a natural finish. They would be perfect for a ‘no makeup’ makeup day, or when you want a light splash of colour without committing to a full lipstick for the day.

7/10.

Sophie’s Take

I really love the fact that the glosses and satin hues are sheer so that you have the option to add a touch of healthy colour if that's all you're wanting. Designed to be buildable, as with the rest of the collection, you can use a gloss shade as the base or top coat.

The matte shades are a lot more pigmented than the satins and glosses. Peter Phillips wanted the palette to be universal - so there's a nude for every skin tone in this palette.

The Verdict

The formulas aren't as long-wearing as we had anticipated. The mattes are definitely a lot more pigmented and provide better color payoff as you can see in the images below. But don't purchase the palette expecting one application to last the whole day. You'll probably need to top it up at least thrice during the day after you eat and drink. I actually think it makes reapplication easier though as you don't have a crusty faded base to work around like normal matte formulas. Thankfully, there's a lot of new matte formulas out now that are comfortable and thin like an ink stain. But that's for another time.

I also noticed that Peter Phillips created ombre lips for the campaign imagery. Using the gloss as a primer, he then layers the entire lip with a satin shade and adds the pigmented punch to the inner lip for a just-bitten look. In terms of a rating, I would give it a 7/10 due to the flattering hues. However, I would've preferred the glosses to be a little shinier and the satin shades to be a bit more long-wearing. Nothing to cry over though as you can apply your own gloss with the desired finish and impact over the top.
