Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette Review

BY SOPHIE CHUNG & REBECCA DIEUDONNE

With every year that passes by, I've discovered that one should (or at least myself) do makeup for real life, not purely for photos - a lesson that social media has been inadvertently(?) teaching.

The recent trend I'm loving is the lit-from-within glow. If you follow Dior's Instagram, you would've seen Bella Hadid rave about this.

The Glow Palette is a beautiful highlighter quad that includes a pearl tone, a golden-champagne tone, a rosy pink, and a copper hue. It is quite pearlescent (which is a plus in my books!) so rather than applying all over my face, I mixed the pearl and pinky shades together and concentrated on the tip of my nose and high points of my cheeks. I loved the colour but found the intensity of the highlight didn’t last too long. I tried again with a different brush and produced a beautiful ‘lived in’ glow in photos and I would use again.

I preferred to use a swooping motion with a tulip shaped fluffy brush, instead of the densely packed contour brush. The product looks more diffused and natural.

9/10. I like the option of using the shades individually or combining for a natural all-over glow. The packaging again is gorgeous, and the highlight shades are nicely pigmented. Cooler skin tones will benefit from the pink and pearl, whereas olive complexions will love the warmth of the gold and copper.

Sophie’s Review

You don't need to make everything 'pop' for an extraterrestrial to see you from outer space. That 'white streak' approach was all the rave when highlighting products first dropped but the industry has since evolved to create products that are more elegant.

The two strobing shades of white and gold are simply stunning and looks incredible mixed together. Dior's highlighters are always insanely beautiful - they're finely milled and usually rather subtle with small specks of glitter through it, perfect for delicate strobing. However, the all four shades in new Glow Face Palette packs a punch like never before with its highly illuminating pearlescent finish. The glitter has been left at bay for this palette.

I used to go in with a large angled fluffy brush to strobe, but have since found that a dense foundation brush (with the aid of MAC Fix+, you can step it up a notch) is also pretty incredible at making highlighters stick to your face like a smooth second-skin to avoid the exacerbation of visible fine lines around your eye and upper cheekbone area. I absolutely detest that. It's simultaneously aging yet tacky and shows poor makeup abilities. The buffing technique should work to create those reflections whenever you move your face. If you want more impact, you can always go on top of the buffed highlighter with a small fluffy brush to add another layer of ethereal brightness, ensuring that you don't go over-the-top and make it cakey.

The palette is in one universal shade and would work for every skin tone as a go-to strobing quad. The pink is quite a light shade and despite it being dubbed a 'blush,' it's incredibly reflective and not that pigmented as I usually go for, so it works amazing as a pink highlighter. However, if you have fair skin, the pink colour would come through a lot stronger than if you're olive toned or darker.

I love saturated colour on my cheeks, so personally, this blush doesn't have enough pigment to use solely as a blush. I think it would look magical with a layer of matte blush underneath, then a wash of the pink and white shades on top for that gorgeous, healthy, youthful 19-year-old glow. For a golden goddess look, the bronze and gold shades mixed together looks killer on top of the Dior Backstage Contour Palette which I simply adore.

The Verdict

Overall, I'd give this a 10/10 as an easy-to-use, goof-proof glow palette for everyone. All four shades are simply remarkable and long-wearing and I reckon it's one of those essential makeup bag items that you'll keep topping up every time it runs low. You can build up the intensity pretty easily and it's phenomenal at creating the widely-coveted radiance. Plus - the packaging is super lightweight designed for MUAs on the go which makes it great for travelling with.

Update: I just had a meeting with Dior - the head MUA in Australia for Dior has said to mix all four shades together for the ultimate highlighter shade. So there's another application tip! After testing this yesterday, I've found that my favourite combos for winter while my skin is porcelain; is the white + gold mix and the white + pink mix. Super delish.
