A Sit Down with Boh Runga
BY JENNY JUNG
On creative pursuits, actively ageing and embracing natural wellness.

Just two immigrant eldest daughters yapping about balancing multiple passions, family and creativity.
Boh Runga, jewellery designer, musician and now Creative Director and Ambassador for AiOra, seems to juggle it all — balancing creativity, wellness and a hectic schedule with admirable determination. While it may seem effortless from the outside, Boh is quick to share that it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to manage everything. As a 25-year-old navigating my own creative pursuits and a fellow eldest daughter, I found my time with Boh incredibly relatable and inspirational.
Honestly, I can only hope that one day I’ll embody the same grace and resilience she carries while pursuing my own ambitions, carving out a path that feels true to who I am. My key takeaway? Be yourself and tell your story to connect with people, because authenticity is what truly resonates and builds meaningful relationships.
We sat down to explore how she stays grounded, inspired and healthy through it all — and I cannot wait to share everything we talked about!

Balancing Music, Jewellery, and Creative Direction
“Music has always been a part of my life because that was the environment I grew up in,” Boh recalls fondly. “Though music has taken a back seat for the jewellery business, I still get the opportunity to dust off the vocal cords now and then.” While juggling to make time for music, jewellery design and her role at AiOra can be challenging, Boh credits her home studio and her live-in sound engineer, her partner, with helping her create space for music. “I’m lucky and very blessed,” she says with a smile. “It’s all about balance and finding moments to nurture each part of your creativity.”
“When I was born, my mother called me ‘bobo,’ which means precious, and my dad liked it so much that he wrote ‘Boh Boh’ on my birth certificate!” That same sense of family and culture continues to inspire Boh’s work, including her jewellery line, which celebrates the beauty of Aotearoa. “Many of the designs started off as hand drawings and measurements that were faxed over to production. Birdland was the first range which showcases little chubby native birds of New Zealand and then it was Messenger Stories which feature feather and wing designs which all have a basis of how special New Zealand is and how close to nature we are. It’s a piece of Aotearoa you can take everywhere with you,” she says.
Practical Advice for Aspiring Multi-Creatives
For those looking to follow in her footsteps with multiple creative pursuits, Boh is refreshingly honest. “If you plan on pursuing a life in the arts, just realise you may not have a steady income stream. You still need a great deal of luck and drive,” she advises. Her key tips? Get a good lawyer, read your contracts and pay your taxes! Boh isn’t one to sugarcoat the realities of a creative career, but her wisdom is grounded in loving her craft: “It is so important to keep yourself surrounded with a positive network of people who lift you up. You need to find your people who help and honestly give their opinion. Don’t get too upset when you’re told that your idea needs work. There are so many aspects of being a creative that are hard but rewarding at the same time,” she advises.
Actively Ageing
As Boh approaches 55, she embraces the concept of “actively ageing” with humour and grace. “I don’t have the desire to faff around with a complicated beauty routine anymore. Things need to work — and fast!” Boh shares. Her approach to beauty now focuses on what really matters: feeding her mind and body well. “I love makeup and it is so much fun, but I really believe in a less is more approach for my everyday life. I particularly love a minimal base with less eye stuff and a prominent lip. It’s striking and chic. Oh, and I love highlighter for a little bit of sheen… And a smile. That’s the best thing,” she says.
Heritage-Driven Wellness and AiOra’s 5th Quarter Range
Boh’s wellness routine is heavily influenced by her Māori and Malaysian-Chinese heritage. “My mother was very health-conscious and always made meals that had health benefits,” she explains. “We didn’t have much money, but we always had good-quality food.” This background naturally aligns with her current role at AiOra, where she advocates for the benefits of traditional, nutritionally rich products.
Boh is particularly enthusiastic about AiOra’s 5th Quarter range, which embraces a ‘nose-to-tail’ philosophy of using high-grade animal and organ powders. “I’m a singer, and with winter comes the acute awareness of how vulnerable my lungs are,” Boh says. “The 5th Quarter Respiratory supplement has been a game changer for me. I noticed a real difference before Synthony Pride.”
“I’ve been taking the beef liver supplement, which has been a huge help with my energy levels. I’m perimenopausal, and it’s been great to support my system naturally,” she adds. For Boh, AiOra is about championing natural wellness. “Why should we buy products from overseas when we have such incredible, natural options right here in New Zealand?”
Balancing a Busy Schedule with Simple Joys
Despite her packed schedule, Boh finds joy in everyday rituals. “I have my coffee pot set to 7am every morning so I can have my first cup at 7:30. That smell of coffee brewing is just heaven!” She also makes time for her dogs, taking them for walks and playing fetch. “It’s these simple things that help me maintain balance.” Even with busy days of meetings, emails and creative work, Boh remains grounded by the small moments.
Social Media’s Influence on Natural Wellness
As conversations about natural wellness continue to buzz on social media, Boh is pragmatic. “Eat the best you can afford, and read the labels,” she advises. “Some things touted as healthy are just clever marketing. Make sure your money is spent on things that truly work for you.” For Boh, wellness is about nourishing her body with whole foods, staying hydrated and being mindful of her choices. “Supplements are a tool to help you meet your body’s needs, but ultimately, you have to listen to your body.”
Synthony Pride: A Night to Remember
I had the chance to attend Boh’s incredible performance at Synthony Pride, and I was blown away by her rendition of “It’s Raining Men” — truly an unforgettable moment that had the whole crowd dancing! Watching her on stage was an absolute pleasure and it was such a definitive moment where I fell in love with her energy and charisma. I hope to see her back on stage for Synthony 2025.
For the show, Boh wore a vintage white jumpsuit paired with a hot pink tulle skirt from Kate Hewko, and later changed into a Paris Georgia orange dress, accessorised with her iconic Boh Runga Toki pendant and Fan Tail earrings. Her makeup for the night? “I used Tom Ford’s lipstick in Pussycat and M.A.C Cremesheen Glass in Playful Petal,” Boh reveals. She did her own hair and makeup for the event, adding a few finishing touches from her friend Paige. “It’s calming for me to do my own makeup, but I think I should’ve gone more flamboyant to match the fabulous drag artists!”
Boh Runga embodies creativity, health and a laid-back elegance that makes her a standout in everything she does. Whether designing jewellery, performing on stage or advocating for natural wellness with AiOra, her energy is contagious! Speaking with her was not only a privilege but also a learning experience that left me in awe of her passion, wisdom and work ethic. As someone navigating my own creative path, this interview left me with a lot to think about and I am so excited to embrace the changes in my life — just like Boh.
