Live your H2O: Just Add Water mermaid dreams with this new nautical trend.
On the Northern side of the hemisphere, we’re seeing summer. We’re also seeing the start of what could be a very cute trend coming into play. Mermaidcore has been on the fashion radar for a while and now that the weather is (finally) warming up, get excited because mermaidcore is only just beginning.
Nautical inspired outfits and makeup have been popping up on social media, and we’re only expecting it to get bigger with the live action ‘The Little Mermaid’ movie dropping in May of this year. We’re loving all things shells, salty hair, sparkles, sequins, dewy skin and the very popular gelled hair ‘wet look’. We can’t forget the chokehold a classic string of pearls round the neck has on us, as well as, shimmery eyeshadows, bubble nails, and absolutely anything crochet for the laid-back beach girl aesthetic. Long skirts are a must when it comes to mermaidcore too - wouldn’t want anyone to spot the mermaid tail hiding underneath.
We’ve seen a plethora of celebrities dressed in mermaidcore, whether they’ve gone the ethereal route, or for more of a dark siren vibe, we are absolutely loving this trend.
Get The Look:
Crochet
Make sure you buy crochet pieces from somewhere sustainable as crochet can’t be made by machines, which means there’s a high chance that crochet pieces from fast fashion brands were made by underpaid staff, who work in unethical conditions. We suggest having a mooch around for a small business on Instagram, here are some of our faves.

Sickening Ruched Skirt - Dyspnea
In need of a tail? This ruched sequin skirt has mermaid written all over it. Go dazzle the dancefloor with the shimmering scales of your beautiful tail!
Mahali Shell Set - Moni
Pulled straight out of the ocean (our mermaid home), this shell set makes for a classic beach girl look to make you queen of the coral reef.
Rectangular Turquoise Ring - Awa Designs
Speaking of coral reef queens… how striking is this turquoise ring?! Although turquoise technically isn’t from the ocean, it sure looks like it should be. The breathtaking blue and green hues in the stone make it feel like you’re staring into the heart of the sea.
Handmade Pāua Shell Necklace - The Pāua Factory
Supporting local businesses will always be something we’re here for and this precious piece of pāua looks incredible accompanied by gold hardware and sea glass. What makes this pāua so special (apart from being handmade!) is that this particular type can only be found along New Zealand coast lines. I wonder what magical abilities it might hold…
Ries Van Noten - Blue Sequin Clutch
Perhaps your official mermaid name is Sea Quinn, who knows? Either way, sequins are a staple when it comes to nautical fashion. Mermaids are notorious for being kleptomaniacs, stealing anything shiny from the human world. Why not splurge on this sparkly, scaly looking number to match your tail?
