Finding high-quality sheets is not a task you should embark on lightly. It's a search for something essential to a good night's sleep as it’s not always easy to get it. The sheets you put on your bed impact how well you sleep. Just picture trying to relax in scratchy, sticky and stiff sheets. You want fabrics that are plush and sturdy that will last for years.
It's a hazy topic for many, especially when our homes double as our workplaces and our beds as our desks, making drifting off into sweet dreams challenging.
Starting with the Basics
COTTON
Crisp, lightweight, and matte in appearance, cotton percale is woven in a tight one-over-one-under plain weave (kind of like your favourite white button-up shirt). Also, because it is often crafted from long-staple cotton, it is incredibly breathable, making it an excellent option for hot sleepers.
Valuable info about the thread count for those who prefer cotton sheets: The thread count of a fabric is the sum of the number of threads per inch in both the horizontal and vertical directions. It's generally believed that a higher thread count means better quality sheets. However, this isn't always the case. Consider the quality of the fibres in addition to the thread count when shopping for your cotton sheets.
LINEN
Made from the flax plant, linen has a more textured surface than cotton and a worn-in appearance that many love (myself included). Aside from being softer with each wash, it lasts much longer than cotton. Linen is another fantastic alternative for warm sleepers due to the breathable, looser weave.
Fun fact, the more you use and wash linen, the softer and cosier it becomes. Additionally, linen's health benefits include its resistance to static electricity, ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria, and maintain a comfortable body temperature.
JERSEY
Jersey fabric has a comfortable and stretchy hand since it is knit rather than woven, and it is typically made of cotton or a cotton/synthetic blend. Think of your favourite soft t-shirt as your bed sheets.
SILK
Lastly, silk is the most luxurious and high-maintenance option in bed linens. Silk, created from the cocoons of silkworms, is a luxurious fabric that is soft to the touch, has a wonderful drape, keeps its wearer comfortable, and does not snag or frizz.
COLOUR
Now that you know what kind of mattress you want, you can think about the colour and pattern of the linens you'll use. You have your pick between plain white and greys, or you can seek gorgeous stripes and gingham to bring in the texture your bedroom may be longing for.
