Annabelle Comes Home Will Make You Smash Your Wine Glass

BY IZAK FLASH

Annabelle Comes Home is perhaps the most fun horror movie experience I’ve ever had

It’s a shame that my reviews aren’t limited to being Tweet length because that really summarises everything I want you to know about the movie before going in.

Annabelle Comes Home is set in the same world as The Conjuring, although Lorraine and Ed Warren (Vera Farmiga & Patrick Wilson respectively) are more bookends for this particular film than main protagonists. This gives the movie a slight spinoff vibe, but still has a nice amount of world building and lore added to the couples exploits.

This time the adventure doesn’t leave their house and centers on their daughter Judy, competently played by Mckenna Grace. She’s backed up by her babysitter The Blonde One, and her troublemaker friend The Brunette One.

It then graduated to a woman across the aisle from me jerking her arm out at one particular bit and knocking her wineglass onto the floor, shattering. This is seconds before an actual glass on screen shattered.

If you watched 2016s Conjuring 2 you would have caught a glimpse of the Warren’s back room, full of trinkets and cursed objects. Almost like a trophy room of objects that are too dangerous to be left out in public. Among these artifacts is Annabelle, a doll that’s possessed by an unearthly presence that wants a human body.

Long story short, pretty much everything in this room gets released and the house turns into a monster movie marathon.

Well done humour breaks up long moments of suspense, and every scare feels earned. None of the jumps come across cheap. I’m going to give Director Gary Dauberman an A+ in this department.

The Experience

The crowd participation was off the charts for this movie, and I think it gave me the appreciation of horror that I’ve always lacked in the past. Review crowds are generally more well behaved, so I hope the experience translates to general audiences well. It started with a girl at the front loudly freaking out and entertaining everyone else. It then graduated to a woman across the aisle from me jerking her arm out at one particular bit and knocking her wineglass onto the floor, shattering. This is seconds before an actual glass on screen shattered. Finally, near the end of the film a man at the back got caught off guard at a sudden quiet bit as he loudly proclaimed “Oh God!” Someone near the front asked if he was ok.

Horror, but for fun. And not like ironic fun either. It feels honest like "We know you know this is a horror, so let's all just have a good time."

This isn’t a particularly clever horror, but it’s well rounded, and a lot of fun. There are very few movies like this I’d revisit, but this might just be one of them.
