When in the salon or at home, you tend to go for the tool that will give you the best shiny result in the shortest amount of time.
Newton Cook is the Creative Director of Rodney Wayne and the absolute king of butterfly moments. I met him years ago at a ghd event when my hair was an absolute mess, damaged from multiple rounds of extreme colouring during my 20’s when I used my mane as a tool for expression. Sick of the dry hay-like texture in perpetual knots, Newton helped me start anew with a bob cut in May 2020. Since then, he’s been my absolute angel who has continued to be solely responsible for my hair transformations. When the photo memories pop up on my phone of Newton and I, you can bet I get teary-eyed looking at them with a barrage of messages ending up in his DMs about how much I love him. And because my hair has never looked this good, his expertise has been extended to my circle of friends.
While voluminous blow-dries are most definitely the style that you want to don, it’s the most difficult method to style yourself and a straightener is what we turn to. Since all the high end hot tool brands have released cordless numbers to cater for our modern lives that are oftentimes chaotic, I asked Newton to spill the tea on which one is worth our hard-earned money because these new releases could cause a hernia with their price points. He’s handled all of them many a time and there wouldn’t be anyone better to dish the dirty on the battle of cordless straighteners.
Plus, my hair is extremely thick and tough like that of a horses and I’m an extremely impatient person so I didn’t want to comment on this noteworthy comparison.
So without further ado, I’ll let Newton take the reins.
When in the salon or at home, you tend to go for the tool that’s going to give you the best shiny result in the shortest amount of time. My go-to in salon is the ghd Platinum+ for a quick and easy look with a glossy result or the L’Oreal Steampod when I need the hair to be extra Sleek.
When I’m at an event or on location for a shoot, I’m always looking for the most versatile tool that can do the following for me; 1) comfortable to use 2) compact enough to fit in my travel bag 3) light enough to carry around to each location and 4) give me the best result.
These are my findings when using these tools.
Ghd Unplugged
The Ghd Unplugged is a great tool for touch-ups or a quick restyle before any event, it's great in size, has a nice shape, looks great and will fit into most bags and purses. The weight is distributed well so you don’t feel like you’re going to drop it. It doesn’t offer the same amount of power as your normal ghd and the plates are a bit smaller than your gold styler and original series, so if you have a lot of hair, I wouldn’t recommend it if you were looking to style your whole head. I do think it’sa great touch-up tool to keep in your bag and car. Charged from full, it will give you 20 mins and can easily be charged in the usb socket in your car with a universal usb-C charger. It's currently in NZ retailing at $520.
Dyson Corrale
The Dyson Corrale is a great full styling tool; I like that you can style the whole head with one charge because it does offer the full power of a plugged-in styler. The Flexi Plates keep the hair securely in between them, however, it can cause a bit of tension and pull. It's also quite a heavy tool which can be a bit uncomfortable.
It has a switch that locks the plates together for travelling which is a great feature however it has become stuck on the odd occasion. I love that you can use this tool while still having it on the charge! However, I did find it difficult when the charge was below half as it did not seem to work as well. Also, it needs a wall plug to charge so it doesn’t offer the versatility of charging on the go in the car or with a power bank. Currently it retails in NZ at $749.
The Verdict
All these tools have their pros and cons and I think the tool you choose would have to be personal to you, the purpose of you buying it and the hair type you have.
If you’re looking for a small portable styler to keep in almost any bag and with the accessibility to charge it in your car for those super quick touch-ups for any even, then the ghd Unplugged is the one for you!
If your hair is a bit thicker and you’re looking for a full restyle on the go, then the Dyson Corrale is for you as it has full-size plates, so you don’t have to compromise on section sizes.
Please keep in mind, a heat protection spray is a must with all these hot tools!
