A Review of Clean Makeup Brand ILIA

I’ve never given ILIA Beauty a good look when I browsed the many brands of Mecca. I usually go with names that I know or have heard raving reviews about. I discovered this brand after a chat with my makeup artist @BeccaStevensMakeup. While it’s such a treat to get my makeup done, it’s the best opportunity to ask about what she’s loving or hating at the moment. While blending out my smokey eye, we spoke about mascaras. This was her absolute favourite of the hundreds of tubes she has flown through. My glossier mascara was on its last legs during this conversation, so I was excited to head to the stores to pick one up for myself that week.
Just in the carpark before my shop, I did a quick google study on the brand, ensuring there weren’t any major controversies or problematic people endorsing their stuff, you know, standard procedures. All I found was a stunning Instagram, an incredibly cohesive brand, but also a great lowdown on the brand’s beginning.
ILIA started as a clean, all-natural cosmetics company but later switched to including synthetics to appeal to the masses as they signed a significant deal with Famille C (who also looks after the wildly successful brand Clarins). Even though they switched from 100% clean to including synthetics, the company made a devotion to creating makeup products blended with tonnes of agents that help improve your skin. You may have heard of ILIA Beauty in recent years, but it’s nearly ten years old and is the brainchild of Canadian entrepreneur Sasha Plasvic.

After seeing the likes of Miranda Kerr and Madelaine Petsch effortlessly rocking their ILIA lipsticks, highlighters and tints, it’s hard not to want to try everything! Recently, ILIA’s products have been decorating models at the recent fashion week shows across the globe. The glow you can see on these faces below is unreal. Can’t wait to get my supermodel glow on too.
ILIA stand by the following motto ‘Skin-care powered makeup. Wake up skin, Makeup the rest”. Some exciting words to reflect on while I trial three of ILIA’s best-selling products.

One swipe with the ILIA Multi-Stick gives a sheer hint of colour to your cheek that has a natural flush. A couple more swipes and the pigment will continue to elevate for a more dramatic look. I love that the packaging is simple, and although it may seem trivial, the cap is easy to pop off but stays secure when back on! The twist tube is super easy to use, and the hardiness of this product is what has given it a well-deserved home in my handbag.
This creamy, multi use formula melts into the warmth of your skin. Did we forget that this brand has skincare at its core? This stick’s key ingredients are orange peel wax (great for protecting the skin, especially lips), shea butter, and avocado oil. YUM. They have left out the phthalates, sulphates, gluten, talc, and paraben nasties with this, so you can count on it to put in the effective work.
It doesn't feel sticky, and the staple dewy finish is appreciated. It has a balmy texture so it sticks onto your face instead of gliding around and stays all day. I've been using the watermelon shade, but there are 12 to choose from, covering the corals to the deep roses.

We can all agree that one’s preference of mascaras varies on your lashes and eye shape. Just because one viral product has swept through social media, it doesn’t always work out as intended! - I’m referencing Lash Therapy’s Lash Serum Mascara that’s all over everyone's feed. Unfortunately, we often see mascaras overpromising within their marketing rollouts and it's really only from word of mouth or honest reviews like ours, when it comes to finding what's decent in this oversaturated beauty market.
She’s super gentle and made from naturally derived ingredients. And thankfully, these clean promises don't impact this product's performance because, MAN, we have stumbled upon a goodie. Thank you, @Becstephens, for your brilliant advice.
The tube does it all - separates lashes, curls, lengthens and volumises, argh I sound like one of those commercials…but trust me. It’s all in the wand. Wands with a targeting dual-sided brush allow you to focus the shorter side to curl and volumise and the opposing longer end to help build, lengthen and separate lashes. It's magnificent. From my play, the most effective way to work with this is to use the small bristle side of the brush first and wiggle up from the root of the lashes, then use the longer side of the brush to comb through. The perfect result every time. Big thanks to those kind and clean ingredients for not stinging my eyes when taking off, like many mascaras do. This one sadly isn't waterproof, but if that doesn't phase you, I would highly recommend it. You’ll spot the mini version of this mascara in the beauty boxes that line Mecca’s queue. Urging you to have a nosy on your way and fish this one out for trial.
