A how-to on getting that radiant blushing look for oily skin types!
Cream blushes have taken centre stage in the world of makeup for quite some time now. Although, as a beauty editor, I've observed a trend where the spotlight is often on formulas more attuned to normal or dry complexions, and I just don't think that's fair!
It's time to break down the idea that cream blushes are exclusive to specific skin types. Just because you have combo or oily skin, it doesn't mean you can't experiment with liquids or creams. In saying that, it's essential to consider what ingredients and formulas will work best with your complexion.
Today, we will discuss five liquid and cream blushes that defy convention by delivering high coverage, long-lasting results! With these products, you won't have to worry about separation or greasiness, and you can still achieve a beautiful finish that you can really only achieve with a cream or liquid product.

LYS Higher Standard Satin Matte Cream Blush
The LYS Higher Standard Satin Matte Cream Blush is not playing around! If you have any texture or acne on the cheek area and find that cream or even powder products disrupt your base, I highly recommend trying this product. The pigmentation is high coverage but easy to blend. Using a sponge to press this blush into the cheeks, you can build an extra layer of coverage while depositing a beautiful flush of colour and smoothing out this area.
As the name suggests, this formula has a satin matte finish, making it oily-skin-approved! If you check out the ingredient index, you will notice that this cream blush doesn't include any heavy oils typically used in this category. As such, you can confidently wear this product without worrying whether it will separate or swipe off the cheeks halfway through the day!
Patrick Ta Major Headlines Double-Take Creme & Powder Blush
Patrick Ta is known for his professional-grade formulas that are celebrity-approved and loved worldwide. You may recognise this product from your Tiktok FYP or in the products list of almost every major makeup artist on IG. The Patrick Ta Major Headlines Double-Take Creme & Powder Blush is a must-have for anybody searching for a no-fault blush due to its dual-purpose appeal.
In one product, you get a cream and powder formula that compliments each other beautifully. According to Patrick Ta, you should use the powder blush to sweep across the wider plains of your cheeks and create a blush pop with the ever-so-pigmented cream formula on top! However, if you are a beginner learning to blend, you can lay down the cream product first for a more straightforward, fuss-free application method. Both ways ensure a long-lasting blush that will make your cheeks blush all day long! Plus, this formula is entirely oil-free!
NARS Air Matte Blush
The NARS Air Matte Blush is a perfect option for those looking for a more delicately pigmented product but with all the benefits of a matte formula. The unique mousse blush is incredibly soft and easy to blend and build.
NARS uses a colour diffusion complex which blends a mix of silky polymers and micro powders for a smooth cloud-like finish that is sumptuously matte. I also want you to check out the shade range, full of muted nudes, pink and peaches for a gorgeous girl-next-door blush!
NARS, Air Matte Blush, $54 NZD.
Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush - Matte Formula
You may be surprised to know that the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush comes in two formulas: dewy and matte! So, if you have combo or oily skin, look for the shades Bliss, Love, Grace and Faith.
As we have discussed in our previous Rare Beauty Editorial, these blushes use an extraordinary ingredient, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, known for its long wearability as it fights against natural oil production in the skin.
Although the dewy formulas also include this ingredient, the matte formula is better suited for those with an oiler skin type as they have a satin-matte finish that isn't too glowy or radiant.
Smashbox Halo Sheer to Stay Colour Tint
This liquid blush is more of a loose cream in a tube than anything runny or watery, like the NARS liquid blushes. As such, the Halo Sheer to Stay Colour Tint won't be spilling all over your carpet! Plus, the formula is incredibly easy to blend and control. You just need to get used to the product, as it dries down faster than most liquid products. However, this is the trade-off for a long-lasting formula!
The Halo Sheer to Stay Colour Tint has a sheer to medium coverage you can customise with each use. As you blend, you will reveal a soft powdery finish that is matte and smooth due to its primer oil complex. Now, this is where it gets interesting. Even though this product utilises hydrating ingredients such as sunflower and jojoba oil, they are balanced with the power of a primer by latching onto the complexion for ultimate longevity that is comfortable on the skin.
I recommend this product to those with combo or dehydrated skin that gets oily throughout the day, as the primer oil complex will mitigate any separation you may experience with oil-free products. Makeup is science at the end of the day!
Just because you have oily skin doesn’t mean that you can’t use cream products. You just have to find the right formulas that will keep you looking radiant and fresh without compromising on oil control. We hope this selection of lightweight, long-lasting and velvety cream blushes make it to your shopping cart and onto your cheeks!
